Charting the Course for E-Commerce Growth
Client: Salcombe Distilling Co.
Location: Salcombe, South Devon, UK
The Problem
Salcombe Distilling Co. is an artisan producer of high-end spirits, including their flagship product, ‘Start Point’ Gin. Based in South Devon, their founders and team are incredibly driven to achieve ambitious plans over a number of years.
In order to reach the next level and achieve their expansion plans, the marketing team wanted to invest in a new ecommerse website platform. But in order to do this, without the available resources in house, they needed to scope out a website brief.
What we did
We researched internal requirements and current situation by speaking to the marketing, fulfilment, sales and brand teams. We then created a systems map showing the various software programmes, plugins and processes for the existing website, and a second version that included their forthcoming changes.
Using these maps as a basis for communicating the changes required, and details from the sales manager, brand manager and marketing manager, we compiled a creative brief to use when shopping for the new website. We then researched x10 top creative web agencies in the UK with specialisms in developing e-commerce platforms for scaling brands. We sent our brief to them with a deadline and received a really wide mix of suggestions and budgets in return.
Results
Whilst the client decided that they needed more time to refine their future plans, they did now have a really clear picture of the costs and opportunities available for their new e-commerce website.
Q&A with Cath

With my background running creative digital agencies, I’ve worked on a number of similar website scoping projects and so I knew that my experience in scoping, alongside the client’s understanding of their future needs would result in a really slick site. (Plus, they insisted that I needed to try their gin and who am I to say no to that?!)

The client was really open with me about roles and responsibilities internally which gave me loads of opportunities to speak with specialist teams and individuals about their personal needs and requirements. We spoke a lot via Zoom and email to collaborate on the systems maps and overall project requirements.
